Funny Life of Pets by James Campbell, illustrated by Rob Jones

Uncover the sidesplitting life of cucumber scaredy-cats, non-stop pooping hamsters, exploding fish and everything in-between (and some things that have nothing to do with pets but are still ridiculously funny). This hilarious book answers all the big questions, like: do sausage dogs eat sausages? Why has my cat done a poo behind my wardrobe? And how can I persuade my parents to get me a pet? For real-life pet facts, imaginary stories, and a generally laugh-so-hard-snot-comes-out-your-nose read, this is the only pet book you'll ever need!

This is a book with outrageous facts, hilarious jokes, insanely funny online videos and brilliant stories all about pets, the author, and all sorts of other things.

Funny Life of Teachers by James Campbell, illustrated by Rob Jones

Ever wondered what teachers do when they're not in the classroom? Are they undercover detectives, champion roller-blade dancers or do they spend their evenings playing with their 576 cats?

This face-achingly funny book will also teach you why you should carry an emergency banana with you at all times, how to fart in class silently without anyone knowing it was you and how to catapult yourself to school by building a medieval style catapult in your back garden!

But be warned – these are NOT normal books. You can read it forwards, backwards, sideways and in approximately 861,000 different ways in between. Whichever way you read it, look no further for fantastic real-life teacher facts, incredibly funny illustrations, imaginary stories and an impossibly silly read!

Robert Harris in Conversation - Monday 9th September

Bestselling Robert Harris will be in conversation with broadcaster and book fanatic, Howard Bentham, at the Amey Theatre, Abingdon, on Monday 9th September.

Join Robert Harris, author of bestselling novels such as Fatherland, Pompeii and Munich, as he talks about his new book, The Second Sleep, which will be published on 5th September.

1468. A young priest, Christopher Fairfax, arrives in a remote Exmoor village to conduct the funeral of his predecessor. The land around is strewn with ancient artefacts - coins, fragments of glass, human bones - which the old parson used to collect.

Did his obsession with the past lead to his death? As Fairfax is drawn more deeply into the isolated community, everything he believes - about himself, his faith and the history of his world - is tested to destruction.

Tickets are £20 and include a copy of The Second Sleep (RRP £20).  Tickets will be available from the Amey Theatre Box Office from 5th June.

Doors open at 6.45pm for a 7.30pm start. Robert will be signing copies of his book after the event.  Refreshments will be available to purchase at the Amey theatre bar.

Shaun Usher will be at Mostly Books at 7.30pm (doors open 7pm) on 3rd October talking about his new book, Speeches of Note.

Shaun is the founder of the Letters of Notes blog archives and the editor of two bestselling Letters of Note compendiums. In Speeches of Note, Shaun has chosen history’s most famous, enlightening, disturbing, brilliant, funny and poignant speeches.  He shines a light on speeches which, despite their brilliance, have until now been largely ignored.

Some of them have, for compelling reasons, never been delivered – such as the chilling public announcement that was to have been made by President Nixon should Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin have become stranded on the Moon – and not returned.

Sarah Dunant at the Abingdon Arts Society - 21st November 2018

Getting Under their Skins - Finding Character and Story in Renaissance Art

Sarah Dunant will be speaking at the Abingdon Arts Society at 10.30am and 2pm on Wednesday 21st November.  The event will be taking place at Trinity Church, Conduit Road, Abingdon OX14 1DB.

International bestselling novelist of the Italian Renaissance, Sarah Dunant, shares the secrets of her trade in this richly illustrated lecture.  Sarah visited churches, archives, museums and art galleries all over Italy to recreate the past as a living and breathing place. During her travels she discovered how the decoding of old paintings, alongside the work of the most modern historians, helped her to penetrate hidden worlds inside the Renaissance and find wonder and drama in the ordinary lives of the period.

Mostly Books will be present with a pop-up shop selling Sarah's books which she has kindly agreed to sign.

Non Members of the Abingdon Arts Society are welcome, £6.00 incl tea or coffee.  Tickets available from Mostly Books.

Sebastian Faulks In Conversation - 20th September 2018

Legendary author Sebastian Faulks will be in conversation with crime author Olivia Kiernan at St Helen and St Katharine on Thursday 20th September at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm).

Sebastian Faulks CBE is one of Britain’s foremost novelists, his books ranging from the classic Human Traces (2005) and Birdsong (1993), which is consistently voted one of the nation’s favourite books, through to more light-hearted ventures, such as the Ian Fleming centenary James Bond novel Devil May Care and a tribute to P.G.Wodehouse, Jeeves and the Wedding Bells.

Mostly Books and St Helen and St Katharine are proud to host Sebastian as part of a tour to promote the publication of his new book: Paris Echo which will be published on 4th September.

Here is Paris as you have never seen it before - a city in which every building seems to hold the echo of an unacknowledged past, the shadows of Vichy and Algeria. American postdoctoral researcher Hannah and runaway Moroccan teenager Tariq have little in common, yet both are susceptible to the daylight ghosts of Paris. Hannah listens to the extraordinary witness of women who were present under the German Occupation; in her desire to understand their lives, and through them her own, she finds a city bursting with clues and connections.

Out in the migrant suburbs, Tariq is searching for a mother he barely knew. For him in his innocence, each boulevard, Metro station and street corner is a source of surprise. In this urgent and deeply moving novel, Faulks deals with questions of empire, grievance and identity.

We cannot tell you how excited we are to be able to bring Sebastian to Abingdon.    Doors open at 7pm and tickets are £25, including a drink on arrival & a copy of Paris Echo.  Tickets are available from Mostly Books and on Eventbrite.

For any questions about the event, please do not hesitate to get in touch using all usual means.   For more details about the venue, including directions, please go to the St Helen and St Katharine website: www.shsk.org.uk

Cressida Cowell in Abingdon

At 10 o’clock on a grey day in May, over 250 children from four schools filed into a hall at Chandlings school brimming with excitement about what was about to happen.

After a brief introduction from Christine Cook, the Chandlings head teacher, multi award-winning author Cressida Cowell took to the floor.

Cressida immediately captured the children’s attention with stories of childhood holidays spent on an uninhabited island off the coast of Scotland.  Her father was an environmentalist who worked with the likes of David Attenborough.  Although he loved his work, he missed the outdoors, so the family spent weeks at a time on the island with no electricity.  As time passed, they built a house which meant that they could spend summers at a time roaming the island.

Cressida talked about how the surroundings inspired her creativity as she began life as a writer and how characters from her book were inspired by sea creatures.  She talked about giants and fairies inspiring locations in her books and how illustrations from other books and fashion prints helped her develop ideas for the drawings.

She taught the children how to speak Dragonese whilst the adults in the room were told to put their hands over their ears so they couldn’t hear what was going on. Needless to say, the children fell about laughing at what they were taught.

The event closed with Cressida talking about ‘Free Writing Friday’ which she launched at the end of April.  It’s a new schools campaign designed to encourage primary school children to write for pleasure.  You can read more about the initiative here.

The event closed with Cressida answering questions from the audience before a queue formed for the  children to get their books signed.

The event was repeated in the afternoon at Thomas Reade School with pupils from OLA Juniors in attendance.  The response about Free Writing Friday was excellent and the excited children were thrown imaginary feathers to help inspire their creativity.

Both events were brilliant, and Cressida was outstanding.  The children hung onto every word and left the halls buzzing with ideas.

After the school events were finished, Cressida headed to Mostly Books where the team had re-arranged the shop in preparation for her in-shop signing.  A queue had begun to form well before the event started with excited children clutching their books in anticipation of meeting the author.

Cressida didn’t disappoint!!  She chatted to every child, signed their books and posed for photos.  After their books were signed, each child was offered a dragon stamp on their arm and in their books to remind them of meeting Cressida.  After over an hour of chatting and book signing, the last guest left the shop happy and inspired after meeting such a world class author.

More photos of the event can be found on our Facebook page here.

Event Cancelled - Christina Jones will be at Mostly Books - 24th May

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, the event with Christina Jones will no longer be going ahead.  Refunds will be offered to those that have already purchased tickets. Please accept our apologies for any disappointment.

-------

Christina Jones, who was born in Oxford and now lives in Abingdon, will be at Mostly Books on the evening of 24th May to talk about her new book, Only One Woman which will be published that day!

Two women, one love story. June 1968. Renza falls head over heels for heartthrob guitarist Scott.

But, after a romantic summer together, they are torn apart when Renza's family moves away. December 1968. On the night she believes to be her last, Stella meets Scott at a local dance.

He's the most beautiful boy she's ever seen and if this one night is all they have, she'll take it. As the colourful and final year of the sixties dawns, the question is: can there be only one woman for Scott?

Christina has written all of her life (as well as having millions of 'proper jobs' including factory worker, secretary, nightclub dancer, blood donor attendant, barmaid, waitress, civil servant and fruit picker).  She had her first short story published when she was just 14 years old and says '....having a novel published was my life's ambition - and one that took another thirty years to achieve'.

Join us to hear about Christina's new book and her experience of the publishing world.

Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.  Tickets are £4 with £1 redeemable off the price of the book on the evening.

World Book Day 2018

World Book Day week is always a busy time for Mostly Books and this year was no exception.  With no less than eight school events to support, the team were running from pillar to post to make sure that all of the books were in place, the authors were well looked after and that the pupils enjoyed each and every event.

Despite the extreme weather, seven of the eight events went ahead without a hitch and the last one has been postponed to April so we were not beaten!!

Authors in Abingdon throughout the week were Helen Cooper, Katherine Rundell, Matt Brown, Marcus Sedgwick & Jay Jay Burridge.  Winnie the Witch herself visited the children at Manor Prep and we ran a book fair at Larkmead.  All in all a busy week but a lot of fun was had by all.

Check out our Facebook page for more pictures of the week.
